They eat anything from grass and dirt, including cattle, nails and wire. Cows do not use their lips to distinguish between different materials and do not chew them completely before swallowing. Dirty objects settle on the honeycomb walls of the organs, directly threatening the surrounding vital organs, causing irritation, inflammation and even hardware disease from ingestion of foreign and sharp metals and substances. Hardware disease will cause cows to lose their appetite, reduce milk yield or lose weight. This common yet debilitating condition can severely impact herd health and farm profitability.
Cow magnets are a veterinarian-recommended medical device used in the treatment and prevention of hardware diseases. Farmers and veterinarians use cow magnets to fight hardware diseases by attracting ferromagnetic materials from the rumen and reticulum. Cow magnets are placed in the cow’s mouth by farmers or veterinarians and then inserted into the cow’s second stomach, attracting stray metals en route and keeping them in the safe zone of the reticulum, preventing them from migrating and causing internal damage.
Hardware disease, medically known as traumatic reticuloperitonitis, is a severe and prevalent condition primarily affecting cattle. It occurs when cows inadvertently ingest metallic foreign objects such as nails, wire segments, staples, screws, or other sharp metal fragments during grazing or from contaminated feed. Due to their non-selective eating habits and rapid swallowing, these items bypass thorough chewing and can settle in the reticulum, the second stomach compartment.
Once in the reticulum, the powerful muscular contractions of the stomach can cause these sharp objects to pierce the stomach wall. This penetration can lead to localized inflammation, infection, and in severe cases, migration of the metal object to vital organs like the heart (causing traumatic pericarditis), lungs, or diaphragm. Symptoms often include a sudden decrease in appetite (anorexia), lethargy, grunting upon movement or pressure to the abdomen, an arched back, and a significant drop in milk production or weight loss. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial to prevent irreversible damage or even death of the animal.
The economic impact of hardware disease on farms is substantial, encompassing veterinary treatment costs, medication, reduced milk yield, decreased weight gain, and in unfortunate instances, the loss of valuable livestock. Therefore, effective preventive measures are highly valued in modern cattle management to safeguard animal welfare and farm profitability.
Cow magnets operate on a simple yet highly effective principle: powerful magnetic attraction. Once administered orally, the magnet travels down the esophagus and settles into the reticulum, where it typically remains for the life of the animal. Its strong magnetic field continuously attracts and holds any ferromagnetic objects (iron-containing metals) that the cow might inadvertently ingest.
By keeping these dangerous metallic objects securely attached to the magnet within the reticulum, they are prevented from perforating the stomach lining. Over time, the magnet and the collected metal objects often become encapsulated by fibrous tissue, rendering them harmless within the cow’s digestive system. This creates a permanent “safe zone” where foreign metallic bodies are neutralized, preventing them from causing irritation, inflammation, or penetrating adjacent organs such as the heart, lungs, or liver.
Various types of cow magnets are available, each designed for optimal performance based on material and design:
Also known as food magnet, rumen magnet, japanese magnet, caged magnet, cow magnet, animal magnet and cattle magnet.
Cow magnets are indispensable tools for maintaining cattle health and productivity:
The strategic use of cow magnets offers numerous advantages for both animal welfare and farm economics. Primarily, they serve as a critical preventive measure against hardware disease, significantly reducing the incidence of internal injuries, infections, and associated pain. This leads to improved overall health for the herd, ensuring sustained milk production, healthy weight gain, and optimal reproductive performance.
Farmers benefit from reduced veterinary expenses, fewer medical treatments, and decreased mortality rates within their cattle population. Beyond the direct health benefits, cow magnets contribute to peace of mind for farmers, knowing their animals are protected from a common and potentially devastating ailment, thereby supporting more efficient, productive, and profitable agricultural operations.
