AlNiCo Pot Magnets represent a specialized class of permanent magnets, renowned for their distinctive properties that make them indispensable in various industrial and commercial applications. Composed primarily of Aluminum (Al), Nickel (Ni), and Cobalt (Co) with iron and other elements, these magnets offer a unique combination of characteristics, including excellent temperature stability and inherent corrosion resistance.
Unlike some other magnet types, AlNiCo Pot Magnets are easily demagnetized and re-magnetized, a characteristic that, while sometimes seen as a limitation, also provides flexibility in certain magnetic circuit designs. However, their true strength lies in their ability to maintain magnetic stability across a wide range of temperatures. These corrosion resistant magnets, when coated with various metals, transfer the attraction force from the non-adhesive surface of the magnet to the bonding surface, providing much greater bonding force. This clever design maximizes the magnetic field where it’s needed most.
AlNiCo alloys are produced through either a casting or sintering process, yielding a hard and brittle material that is highly resistant to corrosion. This intrinsic resistance means that, unlike many other magnetic materials, AlNiCo magnets do not typically require protective coatings solely for corrosion prevention, making them suitable for environments where moisture or harsh chemicals might be present. Their metallic composition also contributes to their overall robustness.
The ease of magnetization and demagnetization stems from AlNiCo’s relatively lower coercivity compared to modern rare-earth magnets. While this means they can be more susceptible to external demagnetizing fields if not properly managed, it also allows for their magnetic state to be adjusted or reset if required for specific applications.
The “pot magnet” configuration significantly amplifies the holding power of the AlNiCo magnet. In this design, the AlNiCo magnet element is securely housed within a mild steel shell. This steel casing serves multiple critical functions:
The various coatings mentioned, such as nickel, chrome, or paint, can further enhance the aesthetic appeal, provide additional protection against abrasion, or meet specific application requirements.
AlNiCo Pot Magnets offer several compelling advantages:
AlNiCo Pot Magnets are stored and shipped with their magnetic surfaces closed with a protective metal washer, often referred to as a “keeper.” This practice is crucial for maintaining their magnetic integrity. Due to AlNiCo’s relatively lower coercivity, prolonged exposure to open air or external demagnetizing fields without a ferromagnetic surface to complete its magnetic circuit can lead to partial demagnetization, causing a reduction in its holding force over time.
It is recommended to attach this protective washer to the magnetic surface in cases where it is not in contact with another ferromagnetic metal surface. This ensures that the magnetic field lines remain contained, preventing potential self-demagnetization and preserving the magnet’s attraction force for its intended application.
